I have been to both and kartchner is much more interesting. I agree with a different submission that says to go to kartchner if you have a choice. Anyone who knows how to use a gps based direction system would take an additional 10 minutes at most. While the road leading to the cave from I-10 is under construction, I disagree with the previous submission talking about 3 hours. Our family truly enjoyed our visit.the love and joy that Joyce has for the desert and animals really shows and was a big part. Also included was the petting zoo, which our daughter loved almost as much as riding Annie, the Norwegian Draft horse she rode through the desert! Bunnies, alpacas, chickens, mini horses, mini donkeys, pigs, goats, sheep.and we were lucky to be there when there were baby bunnies and kittens. So much so, that when helping my husband on Freddie, she reminded him he likes to stop for a snack of grass along the trail, and to not let him! The desert ride was breath taking. She knows each and every horse well, making it easy for her to pair a rider with a horse. She was great with our 10 year old daughter, even allowing her to ride in the ring area after our ride was over, after learning she has been taking riding lessons. Joyce, our guide, was very knowledgeable about the area we were riding through and truly loves what she is doing. The Park also has a riding stable a bit down the road.which we loved! (look on their website under Stables) Our family did a 45 minute ride through the was fabulous. They are doing some renovations, so it will be interesting to see what all goes in. We did get a pizza from the Cafe, which was good. Our guide was young, but very knowledgeable about the cave and its history. Make sure to stop by the Colossal Cave visitor center for cave tours, a gift shop, and a cafe.We did the regular cave tour and enjoyed it very much. The Yellow course will start at the meet center. There will be about a 300m / 5 minute walk to the start for the Cholla Chaser. For safety and out of respect, if you encounter a horseback rider stop and step off the trail until they have passed. There is an active ranch on the map that leads horseback rides in the park. There is a decent network of trails in the park, but the farther east you get from the ranch and camping areas the more indistinct the trails become. While there isn’t too much cholla cacti, there is plenty of other thorny vegetation (white thorn and cat’s claw acacia) so long sleeve shirts and long pants with gaiters are highly recommended. So as a general rule, the sides of the bigger reentrants / washes usually have areas of thicker vegetation. We have tried to map the areas of thicker vegetation but I am sure we missed some. It has a mixture of rough open with scattered trees and bushes of widely varying density with no distinct boundaries. As with the Catalina State Park map, white on this map will look nothing like your white forest at home. This is a new map for the Tucson Orienteering Club. Upon exiting “The Box”, you will punch the start control and follow the rest of the course in order, which will be the same for all competitors. Course lengths will vary from about 3km-6km depending on how much of the box you do and how efficiently you do it!Įveryone will enter “The Box” first, visiting the number of controls indicated by your age and gender in the handy chart below. This is a handicapped race in which all participants get the same map but the number of controls you are required to visit is determined by your age and gender.
